Dear Comet Counselor,

I’m going through a rough patch with my friends. It feels like we’re drifting apart but I’m not sure why. How can I navigate changing friendships?

Sincerely,

Lost Friend

Dear Lost Friend,

I’ve experienced this a few times, and it’s tough. People change a lot throughout high school. We’re all growing into young adults and a lot of the time we grow in different directions.

I wasn’t really sure what advice to give you for this situation, so I asked Chat GPT. It said, “Consider open communication, expressing your feelings, and initiating activities to reconnect. Reflect on whether there have been changes in interests or communication patterns.”

Normally I wouldn’t take friendship advice from AI, but I do actually agree with this. Talk to your friends, let them know how you’re feeling, and see if they feel the same way. Also, figure out what’s changed. Are you becoming different people or have you just not talked as much as you used to? If it’s a friendship that you value, put in the effort to maintain it, even if it seems hard.

At the end of the day, some friends will drift back to you and others you just have to let go.

Sincerely,

The Comet Counselor
