Recently, many students have asked, “Why are the tennis courts being redone?” or “Didn’t we just get new ones?” In recent months, the tennis courts have experienced some cracks due to foundational issues. The asphalt was of a lower quality than what the district expected.

Kyle Polzin, the athletic director of Delavan Darien School District, is dedicated to the success of athletics which includes maintaining sports equipment. “Right now, the tennis courts are still in decent shape. We are trying to be proactive in the issue before it gets any worse,” stated Polzin, “with the deep cracks that are starting to appear, our goal is to fix the issue using a knitted mesh fabric that is flexible and durable. This should hold the damaged surface together and prevent the cracks from continuing to grow. It will also help prevent any new cracks from establishing.”

Thankfully, these repairs will not conflict with the ongoing boys’ tennis season and will be operational during the girls’ tennis season. Since the school caught these malfunctions early on, there will hopefully be no more major damage to the courts.

In the future, the tennis courts will look the same and both the local community and students can use them. The school will begin repairs in June and the courts will be finished by the beginning of the girls’ tennis season in August (if there are no setbacks). We hope these repairs will last longer and create a better-functioning facility for those who enjoy a game they love so dearly.
