What is the National Honor Society?
National Honor society (NHS) is a program that empowers and equips students with knowledge and skills to become transformative leaders in their communities and beyond. NHS membership has been considered a mark of student accomplishment for over 100 years and recognizes well-rounded students, as well as, give schools a values-based framework elevating the culture of scholarship, service, leadership and character. We call those four aspects of the culture, “the pillars”.
What do the Pillars stand for?
Scholarship:
Scholarship represents a commitment to learning. It’s represented by a student who is willing to put in long hours of studying and knows the benefits of a cultivated mind. It strengthens the idea that learning only ends when human life does and that knowledge, which is acquired through diligence and effort, leads to the highest of success. We have a charge of continually expanding our world with opportunities in scholarship.
Service:Service can be established in a day’s routine where many opportunities to help others in school and the community arise. We look for a student’s willingness to work and help others without some form of compensation or public recognition. We are committed to volunteering time and talents to the creation of a better tomorrow.
Leadership:Leadership is meant to create a wholesome influence on the school. A real leader strives to train and aid others to reach a common goal of success. It also comes with the sacrifice of yielding our personal interests for the interests of others. We must have self-confidence and go forward when those around us hesitate. Leadership is always needed and so, leadership is a meaningful and substantive charge appointed to each of us.
Character:Character is the force an individual has that distinguishes them from others. It creates our individuality and our goodness. Without it we cannot respect ourselves or hope to gain the respect of others. Our force of character guides us through life and grows steadily within us. It is achieved, not received and is the product of constant thought and action. We must be what we wish to be seen as and must demonstrate qualities such as respect, trustworthiness, caring, fairness and citizenship.
History
Any student with a 3.5+ GPA by the end of their Sophomore or Junior year will be invited to apply to become a member. Once invited, an application will become available to fill out. Take your time with your answers and be sure to explain thoroughly and honestly. When you submit your application, it will be sent to a panel of five teachers who will evaluate and determine if you will be inducted.
