The Delavan-Darien basketball team was presented with an opportunity to play against Beaver Dam at the Herd Arena, home of the Bucks’ G-League team, the Wisconsin Herd. The G League is the NBA’s official minor league. The experience at the Herd was unforgettable. The opportunity was made possible by the Wisconsin Herd’s Court of Dreams program for high school varsity basketball teams across Wisconsin to play against each other on the floors that NBA G-Leaguers play on. The program is in its seventh year. The name of the program, Court of Dreams, is a fun twist on the famous movie, “Field of Dreams.”

On Saturday, February 22, we rode on a comfortable bus for two hours all the way to Oshkosh. We began warming up upon arrival at the court. The warm up there felt different because the three-point line is not like the high school line (19 feet and 9 inches), but like the NBA (23 feet and 9 inches). So, we warmed up longer than usual so that we could adjust. The game was on, but we weren’t able to seize the win against a very good Beaver Dam team. The upside is that with this game, we were able to experience playing against some of the best teams in the state, and that prepares us for the regionals, on March 5. After the game, we saw Coach/Mr. Denoyer. He used to teach at DDHS and was the assistant coach to our basketball team last year. He is currently coaching the Winnebago Lutheran Academy’s boys basketball team. It was thrilling to catch up with him.
After the game, we rode the same comfortable bus to Coach Pyszora’s brother’s restaurant “Pappa Cafe” in Neenah. We had our dinner there and the food was very delicious, and included mac and cheese, pizza, chicken drumsticks, pretzel bread, and more. We also had homemade cookies after the main dishes/buffet. We headed back to the Herd Arena to watch the game between the Detroit Pistons’ Motor City Cruise vs the Wisconsin Herd. We got tickets, thanks to Coach Pyszora for being able to secure and provide the tickets. With the tickets, we had a fun experience.

During the game, the Motor City Cruise was commanding the game, thanks to Daniss Jenkins who finished the game with a career high of 41 points as the Cruise trounced the Herd 127-91. However, during the game, we were the biggest fans; our roars were heard across the Herd. After the game, the players Reginald Kissoonlal and the guy who dropped 41, Daniss Jenkins, met with us to take a picture. We were of course very ecstatic to be able to get that opportunity. After the game, we rode the great, comfortable bus for another two hours’ ride back home.
Coach Pyszora and the Comets basketball coaching staff provided an awesome experience that we will never forget. It was my first time at the Herd, and to put it mildly, being able to play against a great team, eat at Coach’s brother’s restaurant, and catch an NBA G-League game was very special.
