By Abagail Kiem and Vivienne Frenz

Delavan-Darien High School has announced its 2024 musical, “Little Shop of Horrors,” a science-fiction, comedy-horror mashup. Performances are scheduled for Friday, March 8th at 7pm; Saturday, March 9th at 7pm; and Sunday March 10th at 2pm. Adam Nevala, who will play Seymor, describes the musical as “a science fiction love story.”  Come see the show and support our thespians in what is sure to be a marvelous production..

“The Little Shop of Horrors” is based on the movie “The Little Shop of Horrors” by Roger Corman and is set on Skid Row (a dangerous neighborhood in downtown Los Angeles). The main characters, Seymour and Audrey, want to find a better life. Unfortunately, their love story goes wrong after Seymour, an emotionally-driven florist assistant, cultivates a plant who feeds on human flesh. The stage play was  created by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, the same individuals who created Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty And The Beast, and Aladdin

Rehearsals began January 3rd. Your lead characters will be played by:

  • Riley Flintrop (Audrey) is the female lead. She is honest, sweet, vulnerable, and insecure.
  • Adam Nevala (Seymour) is the male lead. He is shy, awkward, and a bit of a klutz.
  • Sal Gums (Audrey II), is the flesh-eating plant. They can only be described as the villain of the musical; they are manipulative, bloodthirsty, and will do anything to get what they want.
  • Aidan Schuenke (Mr. Mushnik) is profit-driven, greedy, and manipulative.
  • Ty Hillson (Orin) is an egotistical and chauvinistic dentist with a passion for leather and sadism.
  • Kora Hertz, Bray Peandro, and Alison Archilla (The Urchin girls) are sassy street urchins who provide narration for the musical.

This year’s director, William Jacob Krueger, chose Little Shop of Horrors (along with the Musical Board) because it is “a fun show with energetic and entertaining music as well as funny characters.” The Musical Board is comprised of staff and community members: William Krueger, choir teacher at DDHS, Mr. Nick Stark, band director at DDHS, Lily and Adam Drefs, Josie Palmer, and Heather Rhoades (science teacher at DDHS).
