Have you ever imagined traveling back in time? The topic of time travel opens a mountain of possibilities. The main question is: What would you do, and what would you bring? Although the topic seems foggy, there is a better way of exploring this incredible scientific idea.

The trilogy Back to The Future is, I believe, the best trilogy regarding the idea of time travel. It tells the story of young Marty McFly, who grew up in Hill Valley, California. He befriends a scientist named Doctor Emmett Brown, whom he calls Doc. On November 5, 1955, Doc slipped on his toilet trying to hang a clock. When he woke up from his concussion, he had a revelation. He discovered the secret to time travel, the Flux Capacitor. With it, he could travel back in time. He installed the Flux Capacitor into a Delorean, and it became a time machine.

However, there are a lot of issues with time travel, too. In Back to The Future, the Delorean needs 1.21 Gigawatts to produce enough energy to make the machine work. Doc used plutonium to create such energy. Plutonium would only be discovered until 1940. So, in the movie, Marty and Doc have to find ways to get the Delorean up to 88 miles per hour. In doing so, they mess with the time-space continuum, a timeline the universe follows. When they travel back in time, they create alternate timelines, which begin to mess with the order of the universe. So, even though there are some risks when traveling through time, what would you do if you got your hands on a time machine?

After interviewing a few of the staff and students at DDHS about what they may use this scientific power on, teachers like Mrs. Sibilski were eager to respond. Sibilski states that she wanted to go back to see her parents meet for the first time and she would bring money to shop for vintage clothes. Lance Hiemstra, a Junior at DDHS, had a different approach to the topic. He wanted to go back to the dawn of man and stop the rebellion so humans could live in the Garden of Eden.

I’ve composed a few ideas on the topic. If I would have traveled back in time, I would have gone to 1776 to make homework illegal. I would also partner up with Walt Disney to be a world-famous cartoonist. But I would also bring a phone, computer, TV, medicine, and a microwave to 1700. I would show the devices to scientists to speed up the industrial revolution by 300 years. I would also bring blueprints of trains, airplanes, trucks, cars, and buildings to speed up the evolution of machines so that in 2024 we would have flying cars. There are endless possibilities! You could become a country’s leader or a founding father. We could do anything if we had the power to travel through time. We can do anything if we reach for the stars.
