If you’ve read the music field trip permission slip, you might have noticed a strange rule: “No live pets allowed.” It sounds funny at first, but there’s actually a story behind it.
About three years ago, my brother, Michael Kiem, was a senior at DDHS and participated in a school trip to Washington, D.C. During a lunch stop, the group found themselves near a pet store that happened to be selling very cheap fish. Michael and his friend Christopher Karbash couldn’t resist. They bought two fish and named them Marvin and Gaye.
The fish traveled everywhere with them in a reused sports drink bottle, and they even bought a proper fish tank to keep in the hotel room. Things were going swimmingly, until the ride home. Sadly, one of the fish overheated in the bottle during the long bus ride and didn’t make it.
The surviving fish (was it Marvin or Gaye?) did make it back to the Kiem household, but not for long. Within 24 hours, the tank was accidentally knocked over and, unfortunately, Michael’s cats finished the job.
So next time you wonder why you can’t bring or buy pets on a school trip, just remember Marvin and Gaye. It turns out, a music field trip is no place for a fishy adventure.
